an explanation.
We leave our readers to pass judg- ment on the spirit of fairness and good taste displayed by our evening contemporary. With reference to Mr. H. H. Nelson's letter, it is, under
all circumstances such an extraordi- nary production, that we propose to devote a few lines to it in the course of a day or two.
1. Mr. H. H. Nelson to the Secretary
of State for the Colonies. Hongkong, 25th March 1881. My Lord,I have the honor to submit for Your Lordship's perusal the printed report, in pamphlet form, of a Criminal prosecution for Libel instituted by me against Mr John Pitman, and to respectfully call Your Lordship's attention to the following facts in connection with the case :--
2.-The Libel (marked Ay on pago 13 of the pamphlet) was published on 29th March 1880, and was brought to my notice on the following day, when I promptly instructed my Solicitors to prosecute, and the case came on at the Hongkong Police Court on 31st idem (Report of the proceedings mar ked B, ou pago 1 of the pamphlet.)
3.On the saine date (21st March 1880) the Libel was withdrawn and an apology tendered (see Letter marked O, on page 10 of the pamphlet); but having regard to the peculiarly scanda. lous character of the Label I doclined to stop prosecution.
