(3) Memorial from Tsen Yü-ying formerly Governor of Kuciehow, now transferred to Fulikion. When momo- rialist visited Tauu-yi Haion last year in the course of his tone of military inspection, a strong representation was made to him by the gontry and people, pointing out the danger of the farry across the river known as the Wu Chiang H, or Black River, at that place, and begging him if possiblo to supply them with a bridge. Saun-yi is an important centre of traffic, and as nails and passongors have perforce to cross the river at that place, he thought right to accede to the urgent request of the people and build them a bridge. The current, however, is so rapid that neither a stone nor a wooden structure would be likely to stand its forco, 80 He dotermined to construct them an iron

certain bridge requires natural facilities in the shape of moun. tain spors running down to the water's edge ou either side, on which stone stages can be erected to receive the chains; and these facilities the meio- rialist succeeded in finding at a place some four ti above the ferry, where the river was about 200 feet wide. Cou- tricts have already boen entered into for the construction of the bridge, which it is estimated will cost about Tis. 20,000 at the outside, and prob- ably about Tls. 15,000. Having no public fands at his disposal, he wrote to the Governor-General of Szechuen to ask if he could help him, and that high officor shortly furnished him with Tis. 10,000, which be had raised by cou- tributions, and although momorialist wrote to protest against accepting more than half the necessary sum from another province. the Governor-Gen. eral wrote back and begged him to take the money. Considering the utility of the undertaking memorialist deemed it best to accept this public- spirited offer, and, in bringing the liberality of the Governor-General to to His Majesty's notice he begs to add that he hopes to have the work com- pleted in seven or eight months, and to raise the few thousand more taels that have yet to be furnished. His successor, the Acting Governor, will doubtless inspect the work when com- pleted, and report finally to His Majesty.Rescript: It is noted.

were reported yesterday afternoon, and the stock

may be quoted at that figure, although we are disposed to think that evidence of the slightest disposition on the part of would be purchasers to do business to any extent would send the stock up to a higher quotation. Small lots how- ever might be obtained for cash at 110 this morning, although isolated transactions of such a minor charac- ter can hardly be fairly regarded as a guide to the actual position of the stock in the Market. Latest reports of Shanghai business in Banks are of no importance whatever, and doubtless the stock is suffering from the inevitable reaction after the recent sensational doings in the Model Settlement, to which alluded a few days back. Steam- boats are rather firmer, and a few sales at $21 per share premium, were- booked yesterday afternoon and this morning. Docks offer no induce- ments to purchasers, and sellors at 42 would be glad to deal if buyers could be found. Hotels, are also weaker, and although we still quote 112, sellers, it would be difficult to say what is the legitimate quotation for this stock at present, so these figures must be regarded as quite nominal. A fair amount of transfers have becon effected in Sugars at an advance on the former rate, about soventy-five shares changing hands

Oyster shells seven feet long have been unearthed in Kansas. The man who tackled "a dozen raw" in yo olden days had a job before him.

You can excuse a man for taking a gloomy view of life when bo names his child after a rich uncle and the uncle allows it, and then the day after baptism goes into bankruptcy.

The two important events in the life of man are when he examines his upper lip and sees the hair coming, and when he examines the top of his bead and sees the hair going.

"What's the time of day, uncle ?" inquired a young swarty of an old darkey, wearing a very load watch chain, the other day. "Look at de town clock, chile. Dat's built for po' folks," was the ready raply.

A despatch has been published from Sir John Walsham, Her Majesty's Chargé d'Affaires at Berlin enclosing a qopy of a supplementary convention of commerce and navigation between Gor- many and China, sigued at Pekin, March 31, 1880, with documents relat. ing thereto. Sir John Walsham says: "In submitting the convention to the Reichstag the representative of the Government explained to the House that it was not the result of isolated action on the part of Germany, but the outcome of the joint negotiations in which the Treaty Powers had been ongaged at Pekin since 1868 with a view to a revision of existing conven- tions. He referred also to the non: ratification of the agreement between Great Britain and China which was signed at Chefoo on the 13th of September, 1876, and to the value of Sir Thomas Wade's assistance in dis cassing with Herr von Brandt the details of the present supplementary convention when both Ministers were in Europe during the year 1878,".
