country whom I have met, and I return you all my sincere thanks. (Cheers.) On ay return to my country I shall carry back with me the most pleasant recollections of my visit here. (Cheors.)

The following characteristic nuetriolo of the late Denn Stanley may not be altogether uninteresting.

Not very long ago a stranger was walking through Westminster Abbay, viowing the monumental sculpire, whon ho was accosted by a little old gentleman, who seeing him interested in examining certain momments, kindly undertook to be his guide. In the course of thoir walk through the Abboy, the stranger mentioned that when a lad he was a choir boy in Norwich Cathedral, and an especial favorrito of the Bishop, the father of the Dean Stanley, who never met him without a pat on the head and a few kindly words. "Indoed,” remarked the little old gentleman," then you re- ronember the obl bishop very well?" "I look back to the days when many a time I have walked up the isle with the gool of Bishop's hand upon my shoulder as amongst the most pleasant: momories of my life," The two wan- dered through the Abbey, and, before tho stranger loft, the little old gentle- mán obtaïful his address. In a fow days after he received several volumtest. of the Dean's works, inscribel," With Dean Stanley's compliments, as a slight acknowledginent to one who know and loved his father." It is almost meal. less to add that the little old gentle- man was none other than the Dean himself.

Referring to the opening of the Leith 'Docks the Oneriaal Mail says :-The Reserve Squadron, sailing in double co- Jumn, under the command of His Royal Highness the Duke of B-linburgh, and having Prince Henry of Prussia on board, arrive in Leith Roads, on July 25, from Kiel. The vessels con- sist of the erodes (flagship), Worrior, Hector, Valiant, Rapidse, Dofmes, Dorad Warden, and Penelope. The Garth Castle, with Sir Donald Carrie, the Leith Dock Commissioners, and several members of Parliament on board, went down the Firth to meet the feet, and accompanied them back to the anchor- age above Inchkeith. Soon afterwards the Duke of Edinburgh received Sir Donald Carrie and a number of his guests on board the Bagship. In thio evening Sir Donald Currie entertained the Duke and a number of other guests at dinner on Board the Garth Castle. On July 26 the new dock was opened. In the morning the Provost, magistra- tos, and Town Council went out to ILM.S. Tercules, and presented the Duke of Edinburgh with an address, to which the Duke made a brief reply. Later in the day he procociled on board the stemmer Berlin for Leith, and sailed into the new dock with the Harbour Commissioners amid the loud cheers of the assembled spectators. As the steamer passed into the dock, breaking the blue ribbon placul across the entrance, flis Royal Highness doclared the dock open, and gave it the name of the Edinburgh Dock.

The War Office authorities have an- nounced that the following will appear as a proface to the monthly Army List on its next issue:-"The recent changes in army organisation having involved an almost entire reconstruc-

tion of the Army Lists, the opportunity has been taken for a complete revision of those publications. The official (quarterly) Army List, which, un- der the provisions of the Army Discipline and Regulation Acts is evi- dence of the status and rank-bath by aring and regimental seniority-of officers of the army, is the standard work of reference for the army, and contains the fullest information regard- ing the services of officers both on the Active and Retired Lists. Under these circumstances it has been consi- dered desirable that the mouthly Army List should be mainly a distribution list of the activo forces of the army, and a considerablo modification of the information hitherto given is the result. It will contain information as to the regiment, corps, or capacity in which every officer on tho notive list is serving, as well as the name of the station whore is quartered. Tho Yoonary and Volunteers will also be included in the monthly Army Tist; but the Colonial Militia and Volunteers (corrected lists of which are only received every six

The Diario says that the St. Nicolás lighthouse was found several fathoms away from its situation. Nothing is | known of the lighthouse staff; and our contemporary fears, judging by the faithfulness and exactness by which they did their duties, that they were carried away with the building at their posts, and must have perished.

Our remarks have apparently had that he had other mitives for so doing some effect, as during the whole of than his preten led frimmidship for Me, de yesterday afternoon Steamboats were made the medium of genuine busi- ness. Considerably over a hundred shares changed hands for cash at 23 por she premium, and on the samo terms a good many transfers have been effected this morning. They are now very firm at 23, with no sollers, although buyers are plen- tiful enough. The most extensive business has however been done in Banks. We have been unable to trace any cash sales, but a very large amount of time transactions have to be noted. At 117 per cent.. premium for December, and at 119 for January, some seven or eight hundred shares have changed hands, which would certainly appear to be strong evidence that the Stock holds a firm place in the market. Docks are rather weaker than they were yesterday although not a blow has been struck. We have heard one or two lots offered at 42 per cent. promi- am, without finding purchasers, and a further decline appears highly pro- bable. Hotels are still nominally at 112, but even at a much lower rate buyers seem indisposed to do business. Otlior shares remain in statu

quo.

My experience of about thirty years in this colony makes me believe that very few would have acted as Mr. Fraser-Smith did, for he was in a position to compel Mr. de Souza to print his paper without pay- ing a farthing more, notwithstanding which, he was generous and honest enough to offer the guarantee. I have sean gentlemen who sued one another, as well as merchants, who sued captains of ships, Chinese dealers, &c., compelled to comply with their agreements without any consideration whatever, but they use to have a good exeuse" sued him not on account of a fow dollars but on a question of principle so as to avoid establishing a bad precedent" Why did not Mr. Fraser Smith bring for ward a question of principle? M. Now if Mr. de Souza refused to comply with his promise there was a good chance for Mr. Peaser- Smith to stick to a question of principio loss. instead of offering a guarantee against the

Olano, Larrinaga & Co. the steamers Rina Mercedes, Vistoria and Cadiz, and that consequently the Marco des had delayed her departure from Manila. The telegram, however, refers to the sale of the Reina Murales, Vie toria and Aurrera. With this power- fal acquisition, it is beliovel that the Marquis will be concelel the bi. monthly postal service of Manila.
