The money ex-being a hero ho will surely be punished, pended by Le Duc thus far seems to have been mainly appropriated to remove old ruins and in attempting to rebuild the mansion, and laying out an avenue through the grounds. The soil, according to Saunder's report, is poor, hungry and sandy, some portions of which may possibly ouce have been classed as poor sandy loam, but it can now support only a trace of the scantest kind of vegetation, aul has scarcely a trace of loam. It is in no sense adapted to tea culture. Saunders thinks the tea exporttuents, if they are to be made at all, should be

made much further south, and believes Florida presents the most favourable conditions. He reports that at present some $300 per Laonth is paid for the supervision of $60 worth of labour. The only results of the $15,000 ap- propriated by Congress for tea culture

It can be stated as a fact that the papers are beginning to fear that the Conservatives may get a majority in the forthcoming election. Negotiations have consequently been opened with various Liberal factions for an agree- ment to give their united support in each district to the Liboral candidata who appears to have the greatest chance of being elected. The election of the Magistrate in Alsace and Lor- raine shows that the German element

has won and has more influence in many minor places. Even in Merv some of the German candidates have been successful. The popular agitation here increases as the election day approaches, and it is even now evident that Germany has not for many years

boon the arena of such a fierce and bitter struggle. The reason for this state of affairs is that neither the Go- vernment nor the other party has any fixed programme, and thus personal attacks are the order of the day.

Copenhagen, August 5th.

A St. Petersburg correspondent of the Gazette says:-The Russian Court made the recent journey to Moscow because of the discovery of an exten- sive conspiracy for the assassination of the Imperial family during the night at Peterhoff. The police on the 27th of July stopped a boat which had succeeded in passing the guard ships and arrested the occupants. It was subsequently discovered that sixty persons, some of them of high rank, were involved in the plot.
