The site selected for the statue to bo raised in Westminster Abbey to the memory of the late Earl of Beaconsfield will bo at the south side of Statesmen's Aisle, between the statue of General Sir G. The statue will also bo exactly opposite that of the Marquis of Londonderry, better knowu in political history as Lord Castlereagh.

A circular issued by the Government to the overseers of every parish throughout the kingdom, calling upon them to take the necessary steps for including in the forthcoming lists of Parliamentary voters, according to the Act of 1871, all persons occupying any part of a house as a dwelling, has been creating some sensation. The Act gives to every male who resides in a dwelling-house where the landlord does not live, whether he rents a room for which he pays a shilling or even threepence a week, and has resided there a year, the right to be on the

One o'clock P.M. Business is still very quiet on the Stock Exchange, and, beyond a few small sales of Docks at 48 cash, not a single transaction has come under our notice. There are slight enquir- ies after Banks, but holders decline to sell at 106, and we shall no doubt see a decided movement in this stock in the course of the next few days. Chinose Insurance Shares are rather firmer than they have been, and buyers are willing to deal at $305 per

share. Steamboats are rather weaker,

and could, we think, be purchased at $23 per share premiun. The Hong- kong Hotel Shares hold a very nominal position in the share list, and although we quote 110, this Lord J. Lord Onslow moved ou the 11th instant for the appointment of a Coin- mission to inquire into the state of the ecclesiastical parishes in the City of London, with a view to the suggestion of a union of beneficos, disposal of the sites of the clunrelies, and application of tho fands arising from theni.-The Archbishop of Canterbury pointed out that the main difficult in the matter was the opposition of the vestries to the pulling down of the churches and

the union of beneficcs. Lord Gran- ville doubted whether the appointment of a Commission would facilitate legis lation, but intimated that if the right rev. Bench would devote themselves to the framing of a measure, on the subject they would meet with no dis- couragement from the Government. Tho motion was negatived.

In 1873 the Emperor, assombling the members of his Cabinet, discussed and devised a scheme for re-assessing the rate of the Land Tax, which, as | His Majesty then said, differed in overy provinco, the system in force being that specially fixed in the various fiefs before the abolition of feudalism. Thus in one district the land tax was heavy and its method of collection harsh, while in another it was light and leni- ently levied. The main object, thero- fore, of the new scheme was the estab- lishment of uniformity; and the Re- vised Land Tax Laws, then promul- gated, enacted that the existing system of land taxation should be entirely abolished, and that an uniform rate of 3 per cent, (reduced to 23 per cent. in 1877), should in future be levied on the value of all property, which value was further provided that no increase or diminution of this rato should there-
