CHINESE EMIGRATION.
In the House of Commons on July 4th, Mr. Borlase asked the Under- Secretary for Foreign Affairs, in the absence of the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies, whether, considering the continous influx of the Chinese into New South Wales, as stated in The Times on the 25th ult., it was the in- tention of Her Majesty's Government to make such arrangements with the Government of China as might have the effect of modifying those treaty restric tions which at present appear to stand in the way of the Colonial Legislature, adopting such expedients as the Go. vernment of the United States had seen fit to sanction in the case of California.
Mr. Cropper also asked whether Her Majesty's Government, before consi- dering the expoliency of making any changes in the existing treaty arrange- ments with China with regard to emi- Com-gration from that country into our pany's Shares- 55% premium, colonies, would ascertain what number of Chinese had annually emigrated to Sales. Shortly after we went to press yes- terday, a rumour was circulated to the effect that important changes in the Dock Company's stock were impending and on the strength of this rumour tho shares jumped with one bound from 46 to 53 per cent. premium, and a very large number of sales were booked at the last mentioned rate. Sellers were evcutually worn out, and the price rose to 54, which led to increase business. Late in the afternoon 55 was the cur- rent quotation, although very little was done until this morning when more than a hundred shares were snapped up, and the supply became exhausted.
