our new Emperor. The death of the late Czar-monstrous infamy; a dis- honour and an eternal disgrace as it was for Russia-cannot yet be looked upon as a national misfortune. But if his son is murdered the crime is sure to fall us a most terrible calamity upo the whole land. For the persont Czar- ewitch being but a boy, we would have as Rogent the Grand Duke Wlad- imir; and regency in Russia is bis- torically known to have never brought aught else but public disasters.... Our Emperor is frightfully changed.... Lust night I saw him coming down from his apartinents. One night the little Grand Duke George, late in the evon- ing, oscaped from his nurses and came running all in tears to his father, loud- ly screaming Papa, papa, let us go away! Oh! do let us run away to England to aunt Alexandra; but not by rail-or we shall be blown up in the air as grandfather was... Let us escape in a balloon, and they will not reach us.' The nurses and ladies-in- waiting were all silently weeping around the child, And such scenes occur daily!"

The late Fire.

To the Editor of

"THE HONGKONG. TELEGRAPH." Sir, I think the community of Hongkong is to be cougrtulated on tho fortunate escape they bave had, of a confiagration which would have dealt destruction to many thousand dollars worth of valuable property, had it been allowed to extend in any direction even for a short space. Of course it is not forgotten that the fire originated in buildings of the soundest and most substantial construction, where the flames could not rush from storey to storey, and from building to building, with the rapidity with which we have seen them in the flimsily erected bousos of the Chinese quarter of the town. Ever since the great fire of Christmas 1878, there have been occasional ont- bursts of indignation in the columus. of the local press, at, the non-appoint- ment of an efficient Fire-master pos- sessing a thorough European training, and much doleful prognostication of the proluble calamitous consequences to be expected at every outbreak have been Bindulged in. I confess I hold with the appointment of thoroughly qualified ruen to superintend and give directions ou such occasions, but I think it must be admitted that the Brigade did the work required of them in a satisfactory manner on Wednesday night; and as for getting a Fire-inister out from home, why, the idea is quito propos terous and unnecessary, for I am sure that the number of persons whom I Leard express themselves with the most perfect confidence as to what should be done, and what should be Jeft undone, was quite astonishing and many excellent Superintendents could have been selected from amongst them no doubt, for they seemed each and all to know exactly what every one should be about. It is a weakness of human nature to assume a dictatorial spirit to one'e fellows, and perhaps its indulgence may be pardonable when under the influence of the excitement produced by a fire, but it is nevertheless amusing to listen to the remarks of those who know so much better than the officers aud members of the Brigade, how engines and appliances should be work. ed and firemen distributed. It is also surprising to find what a number of persons arrived on the scene at the preciso moment when it first burst forth. I thing I remember a few curious stat istics on this subject in one of your -contemporaries on the occasion of the

Inst fre.

The coolies ofthe several fire engines still continue to make a more energetic me of their lungs than is necessary, but I suppose this is specially a Chinese weakness, and must bo tolerated, but they should be prevented running their engines over the hose as they did, with- out the slightest regard to consequences, No doubt the Europeans in charge of thom would be glad to instil into their minds the necessity of oxcercising a

little care in this particular, and have no doubt ofton tried to do so without avail, and it is in no faultfinding spirit in which this is mentioned, but rathor that I consider the European officers and metabors of the Brigades, as well as tb permanent members of the Chinese squads, showed that they were not without some fair amount of knowledge of their duties.

AQUARIUS. Hongkong, 22nd July, 1881.

To the Editor of

"THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPIL" Sir,-Any one who reads the China Mail might easily answer the question it asks in its issue of the 19th inst.

Why do our fingers run through the files, &c."? Why to lay hold of any false statement of the many to be found thereiu concerning Governor Hou- nessy.

If you refer to any of the subscribers present at the meeting at Government House alluded to, you will fled that Governor Hennessy made no reference of the kind to Mr. Parnell, If I am

was the Attorney not mistaken it General who made the remark about Parnell; but it certainly was not the Governor.

I am quite ready to send you $25 to stake against an equal sum froin the China Mail, (the whole to go to the benefit of Tonnochy's Compassionate Fund for indigent discharged prisoners), on this point, and this I think would be a good way of practically showing up the atrocious nis-statements your con- tomporary has been guiltly of.

The device is evidently to injure the Governor in the estimation of his fellow-countrymen, a dodge 1 have seen through for a very long time.

I am, Sir,

:

Your's faithfully,

AN ADMIRER OF FAIRPLAY. Hongkong, 21st July, 1881.

[We refer our correspoudont to an article in to-day's Telegraph on this subject. It was Mr. Plunket, not the Attorney General, who made the re- ferences to Mr. Parnell, cooly attribut- ed by the China Mail to the Governor. Our contemporary is conducted on ro ligious principles, so your challenge is not likely to be taken op.-Ed. IKT)

INTELLIGENCE.

Friday, July 22nd, 1881. One o'clock P.M.

The Business on the Stock Ex- change has been almost a dead letter since we last wrote. A few sales of China Fires at 295 were booked yesterday afternoon, and we think more business could be done at the same price. In view of the interim divident of five dollars per share which will be paid on August 15th, inquiries after Sugars at $165 have been rather, numerous without however leading to anything in the shape of business. Banles are quiet at the old price, a few small lots being still on offer at 109 per cent premium, cash. Several hold- crs of Hotels seem anxious to sell at 115, but we have not noted, or heard of a single transaction in this stock since our last issue. Docks

shares are on offer at 60 for the end are equally quiet, although plenty

of the month.

appear.

We are told that amongst the Man. chus in the City, five different families have consented to send their infant sons to Peking to the Imperial Palace, to become eunuchs attached to the Im> perial Household.

It is said that there will be an Au. tumn Race Meeting to take place this: year on the new Recreation Ground, and we hear that 10 subscription Grif fins will be brought down to this Port from Tientsin, if sufficient subscribers can be obtained.

Instructions were issued some time ago by the Native Local Authorities to have the "Pagoda" at Pagoda Anchor. age repaired. This structure, known as the Lo Hsing ta, amongst the Chinese has fallen into rapid decay or rather demolition, and in order to prevent the complete eradi- cation of this ancient land-mark a sub- scription was raised for its repair, and the work is being rapidly pushed for- ward. Scaffolding and staging bave been placed around the Pagoda and it is the intention of the officials to have the

structure closed to the public upon its completion.
