and was ventilated a little, and the re- salt of the conversation is as follows:

lat. What good will it do to the foreign residents, whose Bund will suf- fer?

The vote was no good whatever," as no foreigners bing-residents are likely to use it, fearing the contact: with Chinese and its consequences. Those who elect to subscribe will have a small chance of a return from Chinese, for the traffic along the Bund is small except for coolies, who are unlikely to subscribe so long as they can walk.

2nd. Who then will be gainers ? Certainly the greatest will be the gen- oral agents, next the engineers and employés. The general agents will have the handling of the funds, pur chase of materials, and last but not least, a good market for discarded griffins and other ponies. I for one hope that none of our old friends of the Race Course may be condemned to drag the unsightly tramway along the Bund. I can only trust that our old friends of the Race Course have

may reached the "happy hunting grounds" before the tramway becomes a fact, as I, for one, would deplore the fute of such a pony as Jolly Priar dragging

dirty Chinamori from the City to "Nowhere and Back."

3rd. What will be the result if it is not a financial success? The tram-cars would be inferior material for fire wood. The ponies by that time might do for glue. The tramway would not be worth the labour of lifting it again, and the Bund is sure to be spoilt in any case. As regards the future of tram. cars, I would refer possible sharehold. ers to the fate of the Municipal Polico van, which I believe is now a fairly good hon-coop, and last but not least what is to become of the calling of

Yours, etc.,

NINGPO.

1st July, 1881, A correspondent favours us with the following the Island called Non-di, about one hundred miles to the South of Ningpo, (which was taken possession of-by pirates, some years ago, aud which they kept despite the efforts of the Imperial forces to dislodge them,

ALFRED LISTER, Collector of Stamp Revenue.

until the Anglo-contingent was sent down from Ningpo, when the Chinese Mandarin allowed the rabela to pass, through his ranks at night, and thos escape from the assault which was to be made upon them next day), is now being opened up, the best parts of the Island are nowunder cultivation, and some thousands more acres are being prepared for seed. The city which was bailt by the rebels, and the moat a- round the walls, are as complete as on the day the rebels left them; a yamen has also been put up with a number of Boldiers attached to it, so any young man wishing to push his fortune, has now a good opportunity of doing 80.

The Chinese down here, regard the appearance of the Comet as an omen of ill to the Empire, ono having ap peared before, the last rebellion.

The Mandarins are not carrying ont the prohibition against head shoving with the same rigour, which is being shown in other places of the. Empire, only those who are literary moo, or engaged about the yamen, are com- polled to go with unshaven heads, and they are not prepared to give the bar. bors their rico if their shops are not to be closed for the one hundred days Shanghai Courier.
