HONGKONG, 22nd June, 1881.

THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH-WEDNESDAY, JUNE 22nd, 1881.

The present year should have been an eventful one at Ascot, for with French, American, Russian and English horses, likely competitors for the great Cup trophy of the racing season, the race had every appearance of providing a more thoroughly in ternational contest, than had pre- viously been seen in England. I am afraid that any sanguine anticipa- tions of that description were not realised as the esult of the race, so. far as the winner is concerned, is. exactly what might have been ex- pected from his previous fine perform ances; and it seems probable that not one of the American horses had. the temerity to oppose on equal terms, the gallant. winner of last year's St, Leger, Champion Stakes, and Cesarewitch.

In the Overland Mait of the 20th altimo we read that a telegram had been recoived from Albany, West- ern Australia, dated 16th May as follows:-H. M. S. Bacchante, having on board Princes Albert Victor and Georgo of Wales, has arrived here partially disabled, having been struck during a gale by a heavy sea, which injured her steering gear, carried away her life- boat, and did other damage. The Bacchante, consequently parted from the Detached Squadron on the 12th instant, and has put in here for re- pairs. If all goes well she will join the squadron on the 19th at Cape Otway southwest from Port Philip."
