"OPEN LETTER TO MR. LEE TENG HUI, PRESI- DENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF TAIWAN”

For some three years now, you have gone to great lengths with your government to give a democratic and modern image of your coun- try, champion of free enterprise and the driving force behind the small dragon economic of Asia. This image is tarnished today and at term risks curtailing the interest of many European industrialists with regard to products "made in Taiwan”.

Indeed, they will refrain from investing in a country which imprisons a Taiwan company Chairman, Munging-in disregard for the law and witkeit triar, and in contempt for international morals; thus having the privilege of having invented first "economic

hostage "r 众

The European democracies and authorities can today legitimately question to the true sense which you give to the word "freedom" and to respect of national and international law.

Who is to say that, apart from the case of Mr. Oung Yu Ming, there are not other examples of even more glaring injustice when they concern less well known persons.

Wouldn't Amnesty International then be justified in carrying out an enquiry in Taiwan - Laknishing M.President both your image and that of your entire country

Public opinion in the E.E.C., respectful of human freedom, is scan- dalised and would not tolerate pursuing the privileged relations which the E.E.C. has with the Republic of Taiwan.

You are thus positioning your country outside the large movements of business to the detriment of the material well being of your fellow citizens.
