advice from the Attorney General of this Colany till Mr Ball, when Mating Attorney General in 1868, demurred to giving opinions -gratuitously.

Neverthelife I recently referred

to Mr Pauncefate

Dome

questions

which the Consul was very anxious to obtain advice quickly- and as I told him to consider it

quite optional whether he gave

apinion

or not in such cases

he expressed his desire to assist with his advice when he could,

at the same time he

suggested in

the enclosed letter that an

arrangement might be made

380

enabling the Attorney General to

give legal advice to Consuls the terms which have been in force here

since 1860 in reference to his advising the Military Authorities.

As such a

arrangement would apparently put all parties

mare

at their ease and would conduce

to the good of Her Majesty's Service, I would respectfully suggest that Your Lordship might take the

matter into consideration._

I have the honar to be,

My Lord, Your Lordship's Most Oberhent

Ruid Flamm

humble Servant,

wheed Frame Mandonnell

Governor.
