Since my
return to the colony
On 8 October last Tang Yuk has
called on me to present his congratulations,
and
•reference
was made to
one or two
criminal matters then under his
investigation. Last week, however,
while his P&O steamer
was
lying
in our
waters off Victoria he wrote asking to call upon him that I might fulfil my promise to introduce him to
the new Admiral.
In the
course
of
our
conversation he mentioned that he had not been to call
on
His Excellency the Governor since my departure from the colony eighteen months back, and this
was
due to what had occurred at Canton,
the Viceroy being of opinion that the British officials objecting, the less he came to Hong Kong the better, for a continuance of the friendly relations then existing; he added that the Chief
Authority in England had
in a
despatch received some months
ago
notified this Government that there
was no
objection to a direct communication,
