Kreply Shi Iwouths beg to state that through sickness I did not get from Saigon until the 27th April, though my leave dates from the 20th that month, that illness detained me four days at Marseilles.

I therefore humbly request, that you will monetarily favour me to lake into Consideration that it is 20 years since I first sailed for Hong Kong in Her Majesty's Troop ship in June 1846, then a policeman in Her Majesty's 46 Regiment (which unfortunately lost nearly half its number in a few years from dysentery, on board transport ships, and the deadly effects of the climate - more especially in those days).

That I have been since 1846 well and truly in Mr Most Gracious Majesty's Services, once previously on sick leave.

And have in 1862, under these circumstances, hope his Lordship will be pleased to extend it to four months.

I am at present confined to my room with illness, but in a few days will send the requisite documents required with my claim to a Warrant allowance as advised in Your Despatch.
