Yet, I fear that in other places they have not been so well treated, and looking upon the whole stew of the coolie trade, & the selling of the Chinaman's contracts to agriculturists to whom the protecting aegis of a foreign agent could hardly reach, it appears to me that bad Chinese emigration from Macao, Per S/S "Moutons", to Peru is encouraged, if not permitted the better.

I conclude from other parts of China - not Hongkong, that a steamer mentioned in the paper that appeared the other day had arrived from Macao consigned to an Italian house there. The casualties were many, 2607 out of 726, if I remember right. High prices have recently been paid for Chinamen's contracts - 350 to 400 dollars if I am not mistaken.
