I am directed by the Earl of Clarendon to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 20th of May, inclosing copies of two despatches from the Governor of Hong Kong relating to the increased Exactions on opium recently imposed by the Chinese Authorities. I am to acquaint you, in reply, that Lord Clarendon referred your letter to the Proper Law Officers of the Crown, and I am now to transmit to you, to be laid before Earl Granville, a copy.
