I am directed by the Secretary of State for War to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 24th Ultimo transmitting copies of dispatches from the Governors
of Hong Kong and Ceylon respecting the proposed discontinuance of the practice of firing morning and evening guns :
In reply I am to inform you that
the General Officer Commanding at Hong Kong has been instructed to
ascertain from the Governor whether the
Government of the Colony is willing to bear
the expense of the practice of firing Mid-day and Evening Guns and in the event
of their declining
to do so to give instructions for the custom to be discontinued.
I am to add that as regards Ceylon,
Under Secretary of State
Colonial Office.
