the whole space marked "Boiler and Engine rooms" on the drawing received from Messrs. Maudslay Son & Field requires a length of 20 feet.
Messrs. Maudslay Son & Field require their boiler to have an opening 5 feet long through the deck, owing to the principle of their Engines (Vertical) to have another opening in the casing above the deck.
119 was shown 3 feet above the deck. You have all the drawings in your office and can satisfy yourselves as to the accuracy of the above statements.
It therefore follows that the same number of beams must have been cut off if Maudslay's Engines had been supplied, and in addition, another beam must have been cut long over such Extra-ordinary height of the top of the casing of their boiler was shown 3 feet above the deck in the centre.
Messrs. Renn required an opening 8½ feet long for their boiler, and the top of the casing was shown 4 feet above the deck. Messrs. Blythe required an opening 9¼ feet long for their boiler.
The variation in height is so little that the three plans may be practically said to be the same in that particular. Messrs. Maudslay & Field's Engines have a narrower beam chest (horizontally) and therefore do not so completely comply with the requirement as to every part being easily accessible = the increased capacity.
