of the Specification which states "the length, breadth & depth of the Engine and Boiler space are shown in the Tracing more than implied anything that the Engines and Boiler were not to occupy more space in the Hold than was indicated by :: Still less could that Tracing be imagined that it was intended to lodge the Ship's Officers over the Boiler, which may say have to be lifted out at intervals for repair, nothing of the heat and danger to which such Officers would be exposed. Such a course would not be adopted in this Country, and there was nothing in the tracing to indicate an intention of the kind at all.
10. To have compressed the Boiler into the space referred to below the Upper Deck, would have necessitated such reduction in its size as would have seriously lessened the value of the Vessel.
11. Had the machinery been required for a Yacht it might have been thought necessary to refer the matter back to the Colony, but for a vessel required for Harbour duties, hitherto performed by an ordinary Chinese ...
