the business of the Harbour Department, which had hitherto been performed by an ordinary Chinese Junk.

3. The description of what was required, given in the Harbour Master's requisition is as follows:

"Engines of 50 H.P., or less, as they cannot be got into the space shown in the plan." "Boilers for the same." "Mandalay Sons, Field are the best Engineers to apply to in this case. They are recommended as making Engines of the most compact form, which from the limited space in the 'Victoria' is a matter of importance."

Then in a note it is added:

"The length, breadth, and depth of the Engine and Boiler space are shown in the accompanying tracing. As the Engines will not be so frequently worked as on an ordinary Steam Vessel, especial care is to be taken in the arrangement of the Boilers and Machinery that every part may be easily accessible, so that no difficulty may be found in preserving them in an efficient state." "The Boilers need not of necessity be below the water line."
