Officer Commanding at Hong Kong

was

had been instructed to ascertain whether the local Government was willing to bear the expense of firing morning and evening Guns, and

the

in the event of its declining to do

so to

instructions for the custom

to be discontinued.

In reply I have the honor

to acquaint Your Lordship that

the Members of both the Executive and Legislative Council were of opinion that the want of

accuracy in the time of firing of

the Gun renders it on

such

account undesirable, I have therefore notified to the Major General Commanding

that this government does not feel

justified in taking on itself any expense of the kind suggested.

I have the honor to be, My Lord,

Your Lordship's most obedient,

humble servant;

MacDonnell Governor.
