hereafter the appropriation of a large portion as a permanent endowment of the Chinese Hospital now in course of erection. I should, however, naturally be much pleased at having the responsibility now devolves entirely on myself, which was shared by some others, especially as at this stage of the question I must necessarily be insufficiently acquainted with Your Lordship's complete intentions.

I am at least very glad that Your Lordship should be aware of my personal readiness, if it be thought advisable, to act in a very novel and special one, but so are the circumstances.

In the meantime I did not feel justified, when forbidden to place the proceeds of Lying-in Hospital on the Estimates, to publish till receipt of further instructions all details connected with either former or future appropriations of that Fund. I did not hesitate to afford to every member of the Council an opportunity of perusing, if they wished it, a copy of the detailed statement forwarded to Your Lordship.

In my despatch No. 793 of 12th Ultimo, I likewise forwarded a financial statement, Paras. 10 to 16, which almost gave full details of the expenditure of the Fund in cooperation with the members of the Legislative Council. The suggestion is made to a Select Committee of that body.
