It having been recently notified by the Major General Commanding that all direct hiring by the Crown was to be determined by the issue of lodging money to the Officers, a question has arisen whether the continued occupation by these Gentlemen of the premises recently rented for them, or their occupation of any excess of the accommodation to which their rank would have provisionally entitled them, should constitute such indirect Crown occupation as might secure continued immunity from taxation.

I regarded the question as one which should receive the most liberal consideration, because I assume that the Officers should not derive pecuniary benefit from a practice, which hardly operates otherwise than on Her Majesty's Government to defray such extra expenses. Therefore, in anticipation of your Lordship's instructions on the subject, I have notified to the Major General that the exemption from taxation heretofore in force will be continued "ad interim".
