167 Caldwell has only been concerned
with the collection of Emigrants in the
case of one ship in April last the Ferdinand Buchum bound to Surinam,
and the present one the Frederic bound
to Callao in Peru. His connection with
the latter however ceased on the 30th ulto.
In the first
case mentioned, it was
made known in the Country that
emigrants were required for Surinam and that Mr Caldwell would guarantee
and free from fraud. Copies of the Contract
were also sent for distribution in the
Villages. The result of this was, that
a large number of Chinese came here
for the purpose of emigrating.
Clean and effective (not hovels) under my
supervision were provided, and of the
arrivals, 296
were
lodged in them until
the ship
