I am amongst the oldest, if not in years, although yes in actual service of the Government on the active list of Your Lordship's Department, and having given to that Department all that was best worth story of my life and energy, I would be content to retain even the humblest post, if the imputation in question had any foundation.

9. is defence could be quite satisfactory. Nevertheless I do wish I could have left such a topic wholly unnoticed; I am merely adding a reply.

Your Lordship's disapproval of their actions is gratifying to me. May I acknowledge your efforts to serve this Colony and I do not forget that the same mail which brought Your Lordship's comments of the 26th June also brought me the very exceptional boon of a year's leave of absence to be used as occasion might require.

I am therefore not without hope that Your Lordship's opinions may in other respects undergo some modification in my favor. Meantime the leave granted will at least enable me to reconsider my position.
