Agreement made the
day of
one thousand eight hundred and sixty nine, being the
Eighth day of the Eighth Chinese month in the year of the Emperor TUNGCHI,
Between
the one part and Messieurs Valdeavellano and Company of Lima, Peru, of the other part.
The said

on his part does hereby promise and
agree to and with the said Messieurs Valdeavellano and Company as follows
1. That the said
shall and will, whenever he shall be required so to do by the said Messieurs Valdeavellano and Company or their agent, embark on board the ship now lying at anchor in the harbour of Hongkong, and bound for the port of Callao, in Peru, and shall and will thenceforward remain on board the said ship, and proceed in her to sea as a passenger, for the port of Callao aforesaid, for the purpose of carrying out the stipulations hereinafter contained, and on the part of the said
to be performed and observed.
2. That the said
shall and will on his arrival at Callao aforesaid at the direction of the said Messieurs Valdeavellano and Company, do and perform in Peru all such work as shall be required of him the said
whether as a field labourer, factory hand, artisan, railway labourer, domestic or general servant, as the said Messieurs Valdeavellano and Company or their assigns shall or may from time to time require, (the working of Guano at the Chincha Islands or elsewhere excepted) daily and every day for the space of eight years of twelve calendar months each, from the date of the arrival of the said
at Callao aforesaid, Sundays or other resting days customary in Peru aforesaid, and three days at each Chinese new year excepted.
3. That the working hours of each day shall be ten hours, except as regards domestic labour which shall be regulated according to local usage.
4. That the said
shall and will at all times obey and perform the lawful orders and commands of the said Messieurs Valdeavellano and Company or their assigns during the said period of eight years and except as aforesaid true and faithfully serve them in any of the above mentioned capacities.
5. The said Messieurs Valdeavellano and Company do hereby promise and agree to furnish and provide the said
aforesaid and to furnish and provide the said
such food and clothes as may be necessary for the said voyage.
6. That so long as the said
shall continue to be employed by the said Messieurs Valdeavellano and Company or their assigns be or they shall and will at their own cost provide with suitable and healthy lodging and shall and will pay or cause to be paid to the said
wages at the rate of seven clean Mexican dollars per calendar month or an equivalent thereof in the local currency for and during the first five years of the said period of eight years, and after commencement of the sixth year wages at the rate of eight clean Mexican dollars per month and after commencement of the seventh year and till termination of this contract wages at the rate of nine clean Mexican dollars per month, to be paid to the said
weekly, the said
finding himself in provisions and clothes during the said period of eight years.
7. That the said Messieurs Valdeavellano and Company or their assigns, shall and will at their own cost in case of illness provide the said
with proper local medical attendance medicines and board, but that the wages of the said
shall cease during the time the said
shall be incapacitated from performing work in any of the capacities hereinbefore mentioned.
8. That on completion of eight years service by the said
the said Messieurs Valdeavellano and Company or their assigns shall and will pay to the said
a bonus or a sum fifty clean Mexican dollars if he remains in Peru or shall provide the said
with a free passage to Hongkong with food and clothes necessary to the voyage, whichever the said
