We next procured from British Kowloon some links of the chain taken from the body.

With the information given by that old man as to the party from whom he had got the links, and with the aid of the mandarin at Kowloon, cause was tempted to exert himself by the large reward offered. Mr Deane proceeded to the Mainland and was successful in recovering the watch. The party to whom the watch had been sold then gave further information likely to lead to the arrest of one of the supposed criminals.

The Kowloon Mandarin then obtained a warrant from Panton for apprehension of that party, as he lived beyond the Kowloon district, and had an arduous interview with me. He proceeded up country in pursuit and after an absence of about three weeks returned with the suspected man whom he had been sent to Canton to waive being obliged to take him back to the place from which the warrant for his apprehension had been issued.
