I may add one reason why I advocate the signing of the Contracts on board ship, independent of its being right to give the Emigrant a chance of objecting if he pleases, to the vessel which is to convey him. My reason is that when the bonus is paid to Emigrants on shore they are very apt to become the prey of sharpers and lose their money by cheating, gambling or dissipation, which it is just as well to avoid by paying it to them on board, where they can only pay it away again to parties visiting
