of capital funds into or out of the territory.

D. Forward Market

A-forward market aims to reduce the risks borne by producers arising from price fluctuations of inputs, Typically, a contract is signed between 2 parties at a price agreed to now, for the delivery of a good some time in the future. The Hong Kong Commodity Exchange Limited is the only company which has been: granted a licence to operate a commodity exchange in Hong Kong.

Types of shares

There are 2 Lypes of shares in the capital marke

A. Ordinary

share

An ordinary share is a certificate stating that the holder has a right to a share in the capital value of a firm. It carries no fixed rate of" dividend, depending on the amount of profit made from year to year. But its holder has the right to vote in the firm.

B. Preference share.

A preference share Carries 3 promise to pay a fixed dividend whenever possible. Most preference share are cumulative," which means that the holders are entitled to receive arrears of dividends, owing from previous years before any dividend is distributed to the ordinary sharahciders. Preference sharenolders usually have. no voting, rights in the firm.

2.3. A metal ion in aqueous solution can be displaced by another metal which

is above it in the Reactivity Series

・e.g. Cu(S)+2Ag*(aq):

Ru2+(aq)+2Ag(s)

But, Cu(s)÷zn2+(aq) →→→no reaction

This is équivalent to a metal at a higher position in the Reactivity. Series reduces (gives electrons en) the ions of a metal at a lower position. That is, die higher in position the Retals is, the stronger a reducing agent it is. 2.4 The thermal stability of the metal

compounds

increases down series, as shown in Table 2. The ease of decomposition or the compounds increase down the. Series.

2.5 The readiness of oxidising the meta's decreases on descending the series an

a U-tube containing a solution of an electrolyte, e.g. KNO,

(2) a porous partition.

(b) The electromotive force (e.m.f.)

of the cell is measured using a valve for vacuum) voltmeter. (c) The magnitude and the sign of the e.m.f.measured of a cell depend on the nature of the metals M. and M2 used to set up the cell.

If the e.m.f. is positive, then the metal (M) loses electrons less readily than copper.

4.3 If the metals (M) are listed according to the em.f's of the cells set-up between the metals (M) and the copper electrode, with the most negative e.m.f. coning first a series called the electrochemical (redox) series is resulted.

5. Using the E.C.5.

The position of a metal in the ECS gives much information about its properties.

5.1 Reducing power of the metals

The reducing power of the metal decreases on descending the ECS. (a) A metal higher in ECS displaces a metal lower in series from a solution of its salt,

e.g. Zn(s)+2Ag+(aq)→→→z«2+(aq)

+2Ag(s)

(b) A metal higher in ECS reduces the oxides of a meza! Tower in the. series to its metal.

e.g. 2Fe(s)+3Cu0(s}>Fe2O2{$)+3Cu(5)

(c) The most reactive metals reduce cold water and dilute acids.to H ¤.g. 2K÷2H2O➡K* (aq) +20H (aq)+H2{g} Less reactive metals reduce steam and dilute acids to H2.

a.g. Mg(s)+(g)~-~-~* MgQ{3}+H2(g)

Zn(s)+2H(aq)Zr2TM(aq)+hy{9},

2T

The metals below hydrogen in ECS do not reduce water or dute acids at .all.

5.2 Oxidising power of the netal ions.

The oxidising power of the metal ion increases on descending the ECS.

(a) The ions below zinc in the ECS reduced using chemical can be reducing agents such as H2, Ca and CC, etc, e.g.

Fe2O3+C0->2F+3C02

2000=C→2014 CO2

(b) The ions of the most reactive metals can only be reduced by electrolytic processes.

e.g. Na*()ea(s)

(in molten

NaCl)

5.3 Stability in Air and Storage

The ease of oxidising the metals decreases on descending the ECS. The most reactive aetals are readily oxidized by air, so, they are usually stored out of contact of air.

e.g. Kin, kerosene, Na in oil, etc.
