previous conduct, and the necessity which the Secretary of State felt for your removal from service.

Consequently, you have no reasonable ground whatever for now claiming a gratuity such as is only given to a Public Officer retiring under different circumstances; viz. a month's salary, for every previous year's service, because, as stated in my letter, your removal involved the absolute forfeiture of all emoluments and privileges connected with your office.

The fact of the Governor's continuing to employ you after he had been authorized to remove you, constitutes the only ground on which the Secretary of State is now willing to consider any proposal of a gratuity to you.

The amount contemplated may be inferred from his suggesting that it might be in the shape of full instead of half salary up to the date of Mr. Mcorsom's entering his Office.

The Governor, however, hopes that you will justify more liberal views by giving to Mr. Mcorsom, during the next two months, such information as your official and local experience has enabled you to acquire.

In that case, you will not only receive your full salary and allowances up to the 5th Instant inclusive, but on the 15th August next will be given a further gratuity of $960, equivalent to two full Month's salary.
