application and enclose the usual certificate required from which it appears that the maximum leave grantable is strictly speaking only 6½ months because the clerk who compiles the return deducts from the whole leave (3 years + 12 months), authorized in proportion to Mr Rennie's previous service. A year and a half is taken, whereas Mr Rennie in his calculation when applying for leave considered that he had only had 1 year + 4 months, because 2 months were to be deducted on account of service at the Falkland Islands.

Enclosure No 2

To Governor No 92 Dec 1867.

Under the circumstances however I have had no difficulty in granting Mr Rennie's application, and only request that his advancement should not deprive the Colony of the services of so competent and sound and practical an adviser. By his departure there is no doubt that the Executive strength of the Government is considerably impaired.

I have the honor to be,

My Lord,

Your Lordship's most obedient,

humble servant,

James Macdonnell

Governor
