Have, I have now the honor to report: that I laid that Circular before my consideration of the question and of the list and valuation of the existing furniture,

decided to act on

it was

The option

given in the Duke of Buckingham's

the

I

Circular, and to take over at once furniture which I had already purchased:

for Government House.

2.

On that point I think there is

not much

Nor

room for difference of opinion.

An immediate change of system, if adopted, would give

clarity; on the other hand, if the old system were maintained, it would be awkward

for the officer temporarily administering the Government to enter a house filled with my furniture,

and

on the other hand, it might not suit me to have all my effects to be used by another during

the interval of a year

3.

As the new system might entail

expenses on the Public for the first outlays,

I requested the opinions of the Non-official members of the Legislative Council,

if there is to be

a change,

it has

obvious

advantages.

Thus in the event of my applying for leave of absence, to which after 20 years of service I wish to be entitled,

the arrangement arrived at, has secured general unanimity.

I inclose the list of furniture taken over and the valuation ($3,699)
