the Autumn
and has continued uninterruptedly since then, with the intermission of about 20 months between my return from Australia at the end of June 1862, and my appoint-
ment to Nova Scotia early in 1864.
It is true that at the close of
1851 I obtained leave of absence from the Colony, in consequence of severe illness, but at the request of Lord Grey
I
gave it up for the purpose of returning
to the Coast to carry out a measure about
which His Lordship
was anxious.
I
therefore submit
that although actually holding various
Commissions
as Governor for more than
Do years I never once
Enjoyed leave
of absence, nor even the six weeks ordinary vacation except once in America and once here.
I
am
very sorry
to be obliged
now, to ask such a favor, though I am aware that my predecessor here obtained
even greater indulgence; but the Circumstances
above explained, will

pone urging my request.
