A chief judge of the Court of Summary Jurisdiction in accordance with the wishes of the Government.
If the Chief Justice had, with that courtesy which I was entitled to receive, given me reasonable notice that he desired to be relieved of certain cases, I could have taken such measures as would have rendered the trial of those cases unobjectionable.
But besides my objection to try criminal causes in which I have myself filed and signed the Informations against the reading of Sec. 34 of Ord. 7 of 1862 which the Chief Justice has adopted and I believe that a compliance with the terms of his Letter would be illegal. I enclose a detailed opinion on that Subject : - I also enclose a copy of private letter which I thought it my duty to address to the Chief Justice who in consequence of it came to Court at 12 o'clock and tried the first case, and adjourned the Sessions to next Tuesday.

I now beg to lay my resignation of the Acting judgeship of the Court of Summary Jurisdiction in the hands of His Excellency the Governor, much regretting that the unexpected attitude and action of the Chief Justice has compelled me to take this course.
