necessary. I therefore propose to request friends in London to submit the hardship of my unhappy case at the Colonial Office.

I must add that I do not object in principle to allowing the Judge of the Summary Court half my salary. I emphatically object to losing all vacation leave which since 1860 has not been more than six weeks in all.

All such money questions I entirely submit to the Secretary of State; but I do object to discounting my future ordinary leave of absence (which at a future time will entirely restore my health in mind and body) at this time when a relaxation will be more than a mere change - it will be a sort of medicine.

I have, &c.,

(Signed) John Smale

Chief Justice.
