Hong Kong, 1st April, 1889.

Colonial Secretary.

(Hon. I. Gardiner endorsed to Chief Justice Hon. John Smale.)

Leave of absence - Grant of ... on half Salary.

Inclosure No. 2 in Governor Mr. Richard Graves Macdonell's Despatch No. 83 of 5th April, 1869.

The Supreme Court,
Hong Kong, 3rd April, 1889.

You will be pleased to present my respectful thanks to His Excellency for the promptness with which you answered my application of the 31st ultimo for Vacation leave. This has, however, I fear caused His Excellency to overlook the fact that my primary application was for Vacation leave of sixteen weeks and that what I further asked (one month's quarter leave) was for exceptional favour.

The Honorable
J. G. Austin,
Colonial Secretary.
