at the request of the Military Authorities. I was thereby prevented forwarding the correspondence by last Mail. In doing so I remark that Lieut. B... was not aware that the Naval Yard in 1854 had been granted by this Government to the Admiralty by lease in the usual form, at the nominal rent of one dollar per annum.

It would also seem as though he was not aware that the building in question, and which is shared with him by the Commissariat, had been purchased by the Military Authorities from parties deriving a lease from this Government in 1844 - Copy of the counterpart of which lease I now inclose.

5. Lots held by the Military on lease. Over list of all lots held by the Military and Naval Departments as also by other parties.

b. As for other parts of Military ground touching the sea shore they form part of what are generally called the Cantonment. With a view to completing the subject I send a plan of the Cantonment together with the official description of its boundaries by the Military Authorities in 1853.

There is no mention in that description of any grant of the least portion of the foreshore. On the contrary all the boundary stones are placed at high water mark, shewing that it never was intended to grant more than is...
