Sir,

Hong Kong, 23 January

Yesterday at 3 o'clock p.m. I visited

the Italian Ship "Italia" from "Corona, having Chinese passengers

on board.

I deem it proper to acquaint you with

the fearful mortality which has occurred on board that vessel during

the voyage.

The "Italia" left Havana on

the 7th July 1868, with 150 Chinese passengers, who are reported to have been tolerably healthy on leaving

Murray, H.B.M. 81st R.

To Colonial Secretary.
