I wrote you by the lost mail and as Surote letter contained sad news I cannot but hope that it reached you duly. In case, however, that it miscarried.
unfortunately the writer of the saddest news possible for a father to receive and have to acquaint you of the death of your William, who died from the effects of exposure to the sun on Sunday morning the 19th.
I sent off, enclosed in my last letter, some hair which was sent off shortly before the coffin was closed, and it is for this reason more particularly that I hope the letter reached you safely.
With regard to your poor son's affairs, having died intestate, of course everything that was pressed here was put into the hands of the Registrar of the Supreme Court of Hongkong.
