Kong Kong, and the Medical Staff could, with

sufficiently
available for the purpose, any
contribution
would be required from Army or Navy funds
towards the maintenance of the hospital.
Some doubt exists on this point
owing to the following passage in the Governor's
despatch of the 21st
of April, Page 8.
"I suggest therefore that the Colony
Should find the means for enlarging and
improving the Lock Hospital, and that the
expense of inspection, and
Medical Staff,
as well as all other items connected
therewith, should continue to be defrayed by
this government as at present"
Now as
no contribution is at present
made by this Department to the existing
Lock Hospital at Hong Kong
the mere
enlargement and improvement of it, which
had already been contemplated by the local
Government would not probably prevent the
Colony maintaining it entirely
as before;
but, before deciding this point, Sir John
Pakington would feel obliged by the views
of
the Duke
of Buckingham and Chandos
on the subject.
