I have laid before Lord Stanley your letter of the 19th ultimis, upon the subject of the Reciprocity Treaty, recently concluded between the United States and the Sandwich Islands, and suggesting that the offer of the latter Government to conclude a similar treaty with this country, should be met by a proposal to renew the existing Treaty between the two Countries, for a term of years to be mutually agreed upon.
