I am unable to explain it, I hope, satisfactorily.
On the receipt of Sir Rutherford Alcock's despatch I communicated the contents to the Viceroy, and, after an interview on the subject, receiving His Excellency's reply, forwarded it to Peking with the view of obtaining approval or otherwise of apology.
I have not yet received an answer to the Viceroy's further despatch. To avoid further delay, I beg to enclose for the information of Sir Richard Graves MacDonnell an extract from my letter, together with a copy translation of the Viceroy's communication; and if the latter proves satisfactory to His Excellency, I shall have much pleasure in reporting to that effect to Sir Rutherford Alcock.
Of this I am convinced—the Viceroy was much annoyed at the occurrence, and from the first expressed his regret.
