The explanation of the cause was an account of delay and an extract from my despatch to Sir Rutherford Alcock of the 23rd of June, with a copy of the Viceroy's notification, and I understood that the latter was satisfactory to His Excellency. I should have much pleasure in reporting to Sir Rutherford Alcock. I have the honour to forward a copy of this letter.

To this I received a reply, dated the 28th of September, in which the Governor of Hong Kong expresses gratification at the receipt of the Viceroy's expression of regret, and referring to the question of compensation to Col. Sec. See letter dated 23 Sep 1868.

Regarding compensation, (which has inadvertently been omitted in my despatch) His Excellency preferred compensation of one hundred Taels (£33) for those who had suffered injury, and to show that the Viceroy had disapproved the outrage to which they had been subjected, and had done all in his power to redress it; which was forwarded to the Colonial Secretary and acknowledged by him.

Enclosed is a copy of the correspondence on this subject.

On the 16th of October, I reported the settlement to Sir Rutherford Alcock (copy of despatch enclosed but have not yet received his reply). I hope the conclusion arrived...
