As regards Mr Tomlin, late Superintendent of the Convict Establishment at Store Cutter's Island I have arranged that, in lieu of free Quarters, he should receive an allowance of $30 per mensem. Mr Tomlin had, of course, free Quarters when at Store Cutters' Island, part of Clerk in the Land, and the post to which he was appointed on Mr Taylor's retirement was of the value of £500, the same attached to the Superintendency of the Convict Establishment, I felt called on to make up the difference by the allowance which I have stated.

In the Return shewing special payments you will find that a Chinese Sergeant of Police was rewarded with $100 as a gratuity for detecting and bringing to justice one concerned in the Tank Lane Murder. This case has already been brought to your notice in a despatch informing you that Cheung A Po, for the above crime, had suffered the last penalty of the Law.
