It will be necessary to build a retaining wall here. The retaining wall under the Syingpoon School shows signs of settlement and it will be necessary to strengthen it by adding a couple of strong buttresses.

11. The trees throughout the city have suffered severely, many are permanently crippled, others only lost limbs. A strong party has been at work collecting timber and broken branches. Fences in the neighbourhood of Government House have suffered severely.

12. The injury done to Government Buildings has been more extensive than that caused by the former gale, the chief damage consisting of roofs torn off their fastenings, broken glass, and injury from rain. The buildings which have suffered most are the Master's house and Barracks at the Mint, the Officers' Quarters, Central Police Station, the Central Market to the north, the verandahs of which are ordered to be taken down as unusable, the Harbor Master's office, Magistracy, and Western Slaughter House.

13. Houses on Stone Cutter's Island and "Mountain Lodge" at Victoria Peak have been so injured that it will be necessary to pull them down within three feet of the ground. The main outhouses and servants' quarters have been quite destroyed. The cost of putting these buildings in the same state that they were in before the typhoon will be about $2,500. The Signal Station has received considerable damage and must be unroofed. The topmast of the flagstaff was carried away; it had, however, been condemned as unserviceable.
