exposed, have invariably had the Files stripped off the roofs, in some instances the East walls of Chinese houses have been blown in. The Verandah of Messrs Camashouse on the Praya has been blown down. This Verandah was built of solid brick and stone work and secured to the house by Iron Tie Rods as an additional security.
3. Much damage has been done to the Praya Wall West of Peddars Wharf, it is now little better than a wreck as far as Messrs Gibb's Wharf, a distance of 2200 feet, and between the Harbor Master's office and Central Street, a distance of 2500 feet. The amount which I have put down in the estimate accompanying, $94,000, will cover the cost of taking down and rebuilding the present wall on the same site, making use of such of the old stone as may be suitable.
1. This is a device how I cannot recommend to be undertaken as a wall built on the same specification will be again liable to damage during the next Typhoon. I should strongly advise that not a cent be laid out in repairing the old wall, but that a new wall be constructed on a much stronger principle and capable of resisting the force of the Sea during a Typhoon.
