In the meantime I have sanctioned the more immediate general expenditure "ad interim" which is at once required, namely repairs to the $3,000 Mountain Lodge as it would be unwise to lose that building altogether. For the saving of $2,500, if it is to be preserved, its repairs must be at once proceeded with.
On the other hand, the destruction of the portion completed of the Sanitarium at Kowloon has removed the chief inducement for further expenditure there. I have decided that the work in question must be abandoned altogether for the present, whereby a saving of $9,500 will be effected on the Estimates for 1868.
I trust this limited but necessary immediate expenditure amounting, with that sanctioned after the Typhoon of the 8th ultimo to $7,500, will meet Your Grace's approval.
I have the honor to be, My Lord Ruke, Your Grace's most obedient humble Servant,
Retired Governor MacDonnell
