Government House, Hongkong, 23. September, 1867

My Lord Duke,

I have the honor to inform Your Grace that Mr James Whittall, having been obliged to return to England by last mail, and feeling it unlikely that he should revisit China,

of the appointment of M. Nathaniel

lode

Vice Consul for Italy at Hong Kong

"Cowen" that McEwen is at present absent from the Colony, and that his return is uncertain, while owing to the change in the affairs of the Firm to which he belonged, there is great probability that he would resign his appointment.

It, therefore, seems advisable that some other gentleman should be appointed in place of the above.

I have the honor to be,

May it please Your Grace,

Your Graves most obedient humble servant,

Richard Stone, Acting Governor

Mark minell Gwerner
