I append thereto a Memorandum on the subject which, with the Surveyor General's Report, I submitted to my Executive Council the 16th instant, and I also enclose copy of the proceedings of the Council.
Your Grace will perceive that the Surveyor General points out the necessity of very extensive repairs to the Building for the purpose of preserving it in a habitable condition. Those repairs would require a complete stripping of the roof, and replacing most of the woodwork, as also relaying the floors of the greater part of the building, together with a general repainting of the interior woodwork. The entire cost as computed by the Surveyor General would exceed $12,000, and necessitate the giving up of the House for at least four months, or a longer period.
He has since informed me that the main reason for all this expenditure and inconvenience is the destruction by white Ants of the fine wood unfortunately used in the construction of the building instead of Hard wood. Wherever the latter has been used it is as sound as it...
