On the morning of the day, a Chinese detective belonging to the Hong Kong Police came on board and reported that the junk of which I was in search was at anchor off the Town Kong-mun on the Sy-Kiang or West river. I accordingly proceeded up the river between Macao and Lantau Islands into the Broadway and up that river into the Sy-Kiang. At 5. As soon as she saw this vessel, she made sail and ran into the creek about a couple of miles. When finding she was being overtaken, she was run on the bank and before I could get close enough to prevent it, the crew, from 20 to 30 in number, made their escape to the shore. I immediately sent a boat's crew to try and overtake some of them, but they returned after some length of time, after an unsuccessful pursuit, the pirates having got into the country and dispersed.
