A man professing to be a friend of See-a-ser came on board, and Yung-a-hap sent me the above sum to go away and cease my attempts to arrest his friend; this I of course refused, but detained Yung-a-hap as a hostage for the appearance of See-a-ser. On the following morning another friend came on board, who offered the $100 as compensation from See-a-ser to the junk owners, asking me to settle the matter in this compromise manner, and this (as it agreed with the views of the Mandarin official
